Artist Spotlight: Exploring the Backstreet Art District

Categories: ART, EVENTS

Fourteen years ago, New York artist Frank Downs had the audacity to leave everything behind and start a new life in sunny Palm Springs, where he opened his studio in a rundown area that resembled something more like the backdrop of an episode of “Breaking Bad” than an inspiration cove.

“At that time, there was only a consignment store on this block,” Downs (above, in his studio) tells MyCityEveryday.com. “It was called ‘Backstreet Shop’ and was going out of business. I decided to rename this area ‘Backstreet Art District’ to give it a different edge, vibe.”

That decision was providential, as the block (South Cherokee Way behind the Mercedes dealership on Highway 111) slowly attracted more and more customers and artists alike. Now, there are about a dozen galleries featuring diverse and versatile works by talented painters and sculptors.

Elena Bulatova, for example, opened her studio in the district last April, and she’s thrilled to be a part of it. “Palm Springs has a wonderful community of people who appreciate and collect art” she says.

Every first Wednesday of the month, the galleries at the Backstreet Art District stay open until 9 p.m. for the popular Art Walk. But you can stop by any time to check out some cool art in this off-the-beaten-path artists’ haven!
